Welcome to The School of Muscle – a blog dedicated to helping regular, everyday people get in the best shape of their lives!
My name is Bo Burkett and my life’s purpose is to help as many people as I can take control of their lives! One of my core beliefs is that your outward appearance is a direct reflection of who you are on the inside. It is my hope that this blog will help you transform yourself not only physically, but mentally, emotionally, and spiritually as well.
What do you want to accomplish?
First of all, this blog is not about losing weight … it’s about losing fat. It’s not about lifting more weight than your friends lift … it’s about gaining muscle. School of Muscle is about looking and feeling better than 95% of the people you come in contact with on a daily basis (which I can tell you feels amazing!).
Put simply, this blog is about constant improvement. It’s about setting short term, achievable goals and continuing to press forward week after week, month after month, and year after year. If you’re looking for a way to drop 30 pounds in a month (which you would probably gain back anyway) so you can look decent at the beach, then I’m sorry to say this isn’t the place for you. However, if you’re trying to accomplish this task over the next 6 months, then we’ve got you covered!
You have the opportunity to learn from my experience!
I have trained pretty consistently over the last decade, taking time off here and there to finish my teaching and counseling degrees, but overall I have stayed committed to living a healthy lifestyle. Unfortunately I also made several (okay, maybe A LOT) of mistakes that kept me from reaching my full potential during my early training days. Everything I did at the beginning was either based on stuff that I had heard from other people or random workout programs I had tried around the time I was 18 – 19 years old. Not only was my knowledge of advanced training principles limited, but I was also paranoid to train more than three days a week! I thought I would be over-training if I did!
Why School of Muscle?
After constantly searching online for ways to improve my diet and workout routine I noticed one of two things:
- almost all of the tips I came across were written for complete novices, or
- the articles I read were written for people who spent a crazy amount of time in the gym each week
Honestly, I didn’t fit well into either of these categories, and I still don’t. I certainly am not what I would call a novice lifter, but I also don’t have the time to dedicate 15 – 20 hours a week to training. So I started to wonder … what about the guy who knows how to lift, but who’s time is limited because he’s married, works 40 – 50 hours a week, and has children to take care of when he gets home? What about the guy who wants to be strong, fit, and look amazing, but who’s first priority is to put food on the table for his family before anything else? How many websites or blogs are dedicated to helping this person succeed? Well, I can tell you that I didn’t find any I was satisfied with, so I decided to create one.
The bottom line …
Yes, I want to be strong and fit. Yes, I want to keep my body fat under 10%. Yes, I enjoy lifting and want to constantly improve my max bench, squat, and dead lift. But there are other aspects of my life that I have to take care of as well. I consider myself a serious lifter, but I’m also a serious husband, father, and teacher. Each post written on this site reflects that, and all are based on my core belief that working out and eating healthy are ways to improve your life, not consume it.
